Seeing Life Differently (2018)
Kamil is a 57-year-old Lebanese man living in Bourj Hammoud. Two years ago, Kamil had an accident while diving with his brother when a water spout dragged them causing tetraplegia to both of them! Since this accident, Kamil’s life along with his brother’s changed dramatically. Kamil reported that his brother was not able to live with his injury and decided to end his life. After losing his brother, Kamil decided to challenge his disability and keep going on with his life. Kamil expresses that his disability made him see life differently and realize that one can do many things even if suffering from a certain disability.
Being a former carpenter, he cannot practice his work anymore and is now spending much of his time reading books.
The Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR) program in Beirut, implemented as part of the project, “Filling Assistance Gaps in Basic Rehabilitation Services for Syrian Refugees with Disabilities and their Peers in Host Communities in Lebanon” implemented by the World Rehabilitation Fund (WRF) in partnership with Arcenciel association, was able to help Kamil by covering ten physical therapy sessions for him. After the therapy sessions Kamil is able to make slight movements with his hands as represented in the picture.
Furthermore, and being a Lebanese citizen, the CBR program helped Kamil benefit from the Ministry of Social Affair’s (MOSA) disability program.
The help provided to Kamil by the WRF project, funded by the United States Department of State's Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration, was able to give Kamil an additional push for life and hope for getting better.
